Local NHS calls for views on plans for a new mental health hospital in York
The local community are encouraged to give their views on plans for a new mental health hospital at a series of consultation events across the Vale of York.
NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be leading a number of meaningful conversations with local service users, families, partners and staff that will help the local NHS deliver innovative mental health care solutions that are fit for the 21st century. These events will be held in conjunction with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) as the current provider of mental health services in the area.
The consultation events will be held in York, Easingwold, Pocklington and Selby.
At these events, NHS Vale of York CCG and TEWV will be asking local people to comment on possible sites for the new hospital, as well as the proposed number and configuration of beds.
Three locations are in contention for the development – the Bootham Park Hospital site, Clifton Park site and Haxby Road.
Further work is required to fully assess the suitability of these sites and feedback from the consultation will form part of the final appraisal of sites that meet the required criteria.
People will also be asked to give their views on proposals that the new hospital will have four 15 bed wards with single, en-suite bedrooms.
The suggestion is that there will be two adult, single sex wards and two wards for older people (one for people with dementia and one for people with mental health problems such as psychosis, severe depression or anxiety). Each ward will have separate male and female bedroom and day areas.
Currently adult and older people’s assessment and treatment beds are provided across a number of sites and the new hospital development will bring these services together on a single site.
Dr Louise Barker, the CCG’s Clinical Lead for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, said: “We want to build on our work with local stakeholders through the DISCOVER programme and create conversations that will allow us to co-produce plans for a new mental health hospital in the Vale of York.
“We want to commission innovative care and treatment that local stakeholders say they want and their views on the location and the facility’s configuration are very important.”
Ruth Hill, Director of Operations at TEWV, said: “Most people want to receive the care they need at home and developing services that support service users in the community is a key priority for us.
“Alongside this we want to make sure that those people who need to spend time in hospital have access to modern, state-of-the-art facilities.
“The trust has some of the best inpatient facilities in the country and this is what we aspire to for people across the Vale of York.”
